When I was growing up in Sydney, going to the movies on Christmas Day wasn't a thing - except for our non-celebrating family. We would go to the movies or the zoo each year, and both were mini ghost towns. But I discovered my tradition wasn't quite so weird in America, where movies do big business over Christmas and a bunch of big ones are released on the big day. Hooray! I'm free to be me.
So, whether you're a little girl growing up in a Jewish/Jehovah's Witness family pining for a tree (see what I did there?) or just someone who needs to escape the eggnog, here's my picks of new movies out in time for Christmas (with the entirety of what I know about each one):
Amy Adams. Tim Burton. Those creepy retro paintings of kids with massive eyes. Ladies kicking butt and douchebags getting their comeuppance.
Chris Rock. Funny!
INTO THE WOODS
Meryl Streep, singing, with blue hair. That funny fat guy from Gareth & Stacey. A post-modern take on fairytales. Or something.
Awesome poster. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in another retro flick. Wacky detective story.
Martin Luther King. Important. Emotional. (Also: Oprah.)
THE IMITATION GAME
Benedict Cumberbatch. Need I say more?
We're not sure which one to pick... Will you be going to the flicks at Christmas?
